Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar lemon law in California: recalls, buybacks and your rights

If your Range Rover, Defender, Discovery or Jaguar keeps going back to the dealer for the same problem, California's lemon law may require Jaguar Land Rover to buy it back. This guide covers warranty terms, BBB AUTO LINE, documented recalls, reported cases and deadlines.

If your Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Evoque, Defender or Discovery, or your Jaguar F-PACE, E-PACE or I-PACE, keeps returning to the dealer for the same defect, the Land Rover lemon law California owners can use is the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act. When Jaguar Land Rover North America and its dealers cannot fix a defect covered by the factory warranty after a reasonable number of attempts, the company must buy the vehicle back or replace it.

Jaguar Land Rover had the second-highest lemon lawsuit rate of any manufacturer in the most cited study of California filings, and two of its recent recalls ended in something unusual: an offer to repurchase 2019 Jaguar I-PACE SUVs. This guide covers the warranty terms, the BBB AUTO LINE program, documented recalls with NHTSA campaign numbers, reported cases and the deadlines. It is general information as of October 2026, not legal advice, and it does not suggest that Land Rover or Jaguar vehicles are generally defective.

How the lemon law applies to a Land Rover or Jaguar

Under Civil Code § 1793.2(d)(2), if the manufacturer or its dealers cannot conform a new vehicle to the express warranty after a reasonable number of attempts, the manufacturer must promptly replace it or make restitution, and the buyer chooses. Restitution covers the price paid, collateral charges such as tax and registration, and incidental damages, less an offset for use before the first repair visit for the defect (§ 1793.2(d)(2)(C)). Run your numbers in our lemon law buyback calculator.

The Tanner Act presumption in Civil Code § 1793.22(b) applies within 18 months of delivery or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first. It presumes a reasonable number of attempts if a defect likely to cause death or serious bodily injury was subject to repair two or more times, the same defect was subject to repair four or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for repairs more than 30 cumulative days. The first two routes also require direct notice to the manufacturer at least once, if the warranty or owner's manual clearly required it. A vehicle can also qualify with fewer attempts, or after 18 months, if the number was reasonable. Civil Code § 1794 adds attorney's fees and costs for a buyer who prevails and a civil penalty of up to two times actual damages for a willful violation.

Land Rover and Jaguar warranty terms

Land Rover's warranty page says every new Land Rover "is covered by a New Vehicle Limited Warranty for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first," plus a six-year, unlimited-mileage corrosion perforation warranty. Jaguar's EliteCare page lists a new vehicle limited warranty of 5 years or 60,000 miles and complimentary scheduled maintenance for the same period, and says the I-PACE batteries are "covered by a warranty for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first," including a drop below 70 percent state of health. Check the warranty booklet for your model year, and ask the dealer to print your VIN's warranty start date.

BBB AUTO LINE and what the booklet says about notice

A June 2025 Department of Consumer Affairs notice lists Jaguar/Land Rover among the manufacturers represented by BBB AUTO LINE as a state-certified arbitration program in California. Under Civil Code § 1793.22(c), when a manufacturer maintains a qualified program and gave you written notice of it, you generally must use that program before you can rely on the Tanner Act presumption. You keep the right to sue. If you are dissatisfied with the decision, you can still go to court, and the program is free to consumers.

The older Land Rover Passport to Service booklet for model year 2016, published on Jaguar Land Rover's service site, says the company participates in BBB AUTO LINE and AUTOCAP, and that where state law requires written notice, it "should be sent by certified mail." It lists the Customer Relationship Center at 555 MacArthur Boulevard, Mahwah, New Jersey 07430-2326, and 1-800-637-6837, option 9. Jaguar's site lists 1-800-452-4827 (1.800.4.JAGUAR). Newer booklets may differ, so read the dispute resolution supplement for your vehicle, and send any notice by certified mail with a copy of your repair orders. Our guide to lemon law arbitration versus a lawsuit explains the trade-offs.

Land Rover and Jaguar recalls you should know

A recall alone does not make a vehicle a lemon, and a completed recall is not automatically a failed repair. But a recall that matches your symptom can explain your repair history, and a recall repair that does not fix the problem can become part of your claim. This is a selection from NHTSA's database, not a complete list. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Loss of drive power and fire risk are the kinds of problems that can bring the two-attempt safety rule into play. If your mild-hybrid Land Rover is waiting for the final DC-DC converter remedy, record every stall or warning and get a repair order for each visit; time in the shop while you wait for parts counts toward the 30-day total. Our guide to EV battery and charging problems covers the I-PACE issues in more depth.

A recall repurchase is not the same as a lemon law buyback. Before you accept any repurchase or goodwill offer, compare it with what the law provides, and do not sign a release until it has been reviewed. Our guide to manufacturer buyback and cash-and-keep offers explains what to check.

Duff shows why damages must be proved, not assumed, and why it matters which claim succeeds. For context, the CALPIRG Education Fund's Auto Lemon Index counted 1,021 California lemon lawsuits against Jaguar Land Rover North America from 2018 through 2021, about one for every 83 new vehicles registered, second only to General Motors among the 19 manufacturers studied. See our page on the most-sued car brands in California. Lawsuit counts reflect many factors and do not show that any vehicle is defective. Every case is different. Past results, including those listed here, do not predict the outcome of any other case.

Building your Land Rover or Jaguar repair record

  • Get a repair order at every visit with your complaint, the mileage and what was done, including visits where the dealer found nothing.
  • Describe the symptom the same way each time ("lost power, 12-volt warning on display," "smell of burning oil"), so the visits read as repeat attempts on one defect.
  • Photograph warning messages and keep app alerts.
  • Keep every recall letter, including interim letters telling you to park outside or limit charging.
  • Write to the manufacturer by certified mail and keep the receipt and any case number from customer relations.
  • Track days out of service and loaner days, and keep towing and rental receipts.

Deadlines for Land Rover and Jaguar claims

Reports differ on whether Jaguar Land Rover opted in to the new procedures created by AB 1755 and SB 26. A California lemon law firm reported in May 2025 that Jaguar Land Rover had opted in, while a February 2026 list from Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety did not name it. Check the Department of Consumer Affairs list, which can change each year.

If Jaguar Land Rover did opt in, a lawsuit generally must be filed within one year after the express warranty expires and no more than six years after delivery, with time added while the vehicle is in the shop for the defect (Code of Civil Procedure § 871.21), and a buyer who wants a civil penalty must send a written demand at least 30 days before suing (§ 871.24). If it did not, the deadline is generally four years under the Commercial Code's warranty statute of limitations, and tolling rules can apply. Assume the shorter deadline and call promptly. Our guide to the 2025 lemon law changes under AB 1755 explains the new rules.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use BBB AUTO LINE before suing Land Rover or Jaguar?

Not to file a lawsuit. But because BBB AUTO LINE is listed as a state-certified program for Jaguar/Land Rover, you generally must use it first if you want to rely on the Tanner Act presumption, as long as you received written notice of it. You can reject the decision and still sue.

Is my Range Rover a lemon if it keeps losing power?

It may be. Loss of drive power can be a safety defect, and two repair attempts within 18 months or 18,000 miles, with notice to the manufacturer, can trigger the presumption. Recall 26V-599 covers a DC-DC converter fault in many 2019–2024 mild-hybrid models.

Jaguar offered to repurchase my 2019 I-PACE. Should I take it?

Have the offer reviewed first. A recall repurchase may not include everything California's lemon law provides, and signing a release can end other claims. Compare it with the restitution formula and your repair history.

How long is the Land Rover warranty?

Land Rover lists a New Vehicle Limited Warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles and six years of corrosion perforation coverage. Jaguar lists 5 years or 60,000 miles, and 8 years or 100,000 miles for the I-PACE battery.

What is the deadline to file a Land Rover lemon law claim?

It depends on whether Jaguar Land Rover opted in to the 2025 procedures, and reports differ. If it did, the deadline can be as short as one year after the warranty expires. Call promptly.
